One requirement for all knoxAchieves recipients is completion of one 8-hour community service project each semester the student receives funding. For the Class of 2010, knoxAchieves will host a variety of group projects each semester. We will alert the student as well as the mentor of these events and their dates and times when prior to the Fall 2010 semester. If the student is actively involved with a non-profit or his/her church, knoxAchieves will accept these as appropriate projects. If students are unsure of opportunities, please refer them to these websites which host a variety of service options.
United Way: In the right corner, select “opportunities.” This leads you to an evolving list of volunteer opportunities in our community. Choices include Emerald Youth Foundation, National Kidney Foundation, Knoxville Museum of Art, and various others.
This website allows the student to browse organizations with volunteer opportunities specifically for youth. These include the Boys and Girls Clubs, Junior Achievement, and the YMCA.
knoxteensource.com: Upon completion of the project by the appropriate deadline, the student should report to the mentor the date(s), time(s), organization, and his/her supervisor. This information should then be submitted to knoxAchieves via email.
The deadline dates are as follows:
December 1, 2010
May 1, 2011
December 1, 2011
May 1, 2012
As mentors, please stress to your students the importance of completing this requirement. Failure to comply will result in termination of the student’s funding.
